I learned earlier this year that the Sunday School program that became so big in the US in the last century and a half had the same aims in mind, to make good moralistic little young people who would in turn become good Americans.

Wow, great post, Kevin. I think we so often look at the brokenness of the world in terms of major catastrophic events—the Holocaust, 9/11, and so on—but it's right in front of us, in the street we live on. I heard once that Rogers was a Presbyterian minister. Maybe this was part of his way of showing us that we can overcome the brokenness we've all to accept as the status quo, and to say, "Hey, there is a better way to live."

After rereading "Beer Needs No Justification" I was reminded of a great movie quote from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves Friar Tuck: "This is grain, which any fool can eat, but for which the Lord intended a more divine means of consumption. Let us give praise to our maker and glory to his bounty by learning about... BEER."

Hey Kevin...Steve Bishop tipped me off to your blog. I've been following it for about a week now. This is great, almost tempting for me to get in the car and drive up to NC. I hope you all have a great conversation on the issue. Haven't read the article myself yet, but I've been noticing some other discussion around the blogosphere about it. When I get back from my temporary blog hiatus, I'm hoping to explore the issue a bit myself. Peace!

Kudos to Gustave, author of comment #24:
<blockquote>
“Too many Jews; not enough ovens.”

Doesn’t sound quite so hilarious when put like that, does it, Richard?

(Of course, in recent days we’ve heard the revised version also.)
